New Kid

I really enjoyed “New Kid” by Jerry Craft. I love how we visualize what’s occurring and how Jordan processes the info. It has a good balance between humor, advice, social commentary, and character complexity. Since it's a different mode of interaction, different character backgrounds can be explored and understood. An example of the balance is through his struggle to fit in. The humorous portion is him exclaiming “I’m Batman!” As he leaves the house, as the story progresses we see his struggle to fit in at school and in his neighborhood. It reminded me of Starr Carter in “The Hate You Give.”  I found humor in the play on words used for the chapter titles, the call-backs to previous scenes, and dynamics between some characters. I loved how Drew stands up to Ms. Rawle and proceeds to make her uncomfortable by playing into her stereotypes. Craft uses humorous dynamics to unveil ignorance and complexities of life. Humor, Sexual Violence, and Social Justice

  Joshua Singh Sexual Assault and Humor Both articles approach the topic of sexual assault in a very different manner than one would expect. Regardless, the authors provide a new understanding of the intersection that exists between humor and sexual assault. The Time article explains the author’s approach to her own sexual violence experiences. She compares how sexual violence is usually approached in a very solemn manner and how the victim’s story is told using very religious language, and she believes this language or way of approaching a victim’s sexual violence experiences distances the victim from us. The author explains that a new approach of spontaneity is needed. She explains that “Humor, however, disrupts stasis. Humor is a form of action. It requires spontaneity” (Time). Plato, Hobbes, Kent, and Kierkegaard Response

For Plato, humor has a malicious intent because we are finding pleasure in someone’s ignorance or weakness (12-13). Yet, It seems to be situational because he implies that finding humor in your enemy is okay, but not your friends. On the other hand, Hobbes states that we laugh when we succeed. Therefore, we are laughing at other misfortunes. He believes that people laugh because they are pleased to be deemed “better” in comparison to others (19).    On the contrary, while there are people who find humor in other misfortunes, I also believe people could laugh at individual success  without  laughing at other misfortunes. For example, laughing because you're in shock or because you're relieved to have succeeded.  Additionally, Hobbes defines the distinction between laughing with or without offense.
